Scion features in Gourmet Traveller Aug/Sept 2011. Words by Campbell Mattinson:

Unless it's a weekend appointment, you'll need to make a booking at Scion Vineyard but you're likely to regret it should you do.

Scion is a new star of the Rutherglen region. Janice Milhinch and her son Rowland only started Scion ("from bare earth") a decade ago, though they are part of the extended Morris clan. From the start they've been keen to pay homage to the traditions of Rutherglen wine, with their own personal twists. Less alcohol, more elegance is Janice's way iof describing their goal. There is a general thoughfulness to the Scion wines that is difficult to define, but easy to taste in the wines. I found myself swooning; I even liked the off-dry Fleur table white made with muscat grapes.

2008 Scion Durif.

Intense, elegant and lengthy. A lip-smackingly delicious, high quality, regional hero of red. It tastes of iodine, tar, roses and cedery French oak. There is nothing ungainly or overdone about this; it's a wine of pure, oozing quality. A great addition to Rutherglen.

Jeni Port rates our 2008 Sweet Durif as top fortified wine for 2010!

Taken from Epicure, The Age 14-12-10

"If Australian fortifieds are not only to survive but thrive, they have to become relevant to a younger generation. Scion Vineyard from Rutherglen is doing that with a range of new styles led by its 2008 sweet durif, which is boisterously sweet, showing the fun side of a grape that normally frightens grown men with tannic ferocity."

HUGE NEWS FOR TINY SCION!!

Triple trophy haul at the Rutherglen Wine Show! Our great year of achievement continues to roll on as we took home out not one, but three Trophies for the 2008 Durif in the 122nd annual Rutherglen Wine Show, Australia’s second largest! The same wine achieved a 93 point Halliday rating upon its release earlier this year.

Awarded trophies included 'Best Australian Dry Red Wine made from fruit grown in the North East Victorian region', 'Best Australian Dry Red wine made from fruit grown in the Rutherglen region' and 'Best Australian Durif'.

This was crafted using careful viticultural practices and delicate winemaking techniques. The end result is a Durif perfect drinking with both summer and winter foods. In cool conditions, think rich game meat flavours or sumptuous slow-cooked dishes, while the great Australian summer barbeque is another fitting time to splash Scion’s Durif into a glass.

Durif is one of Rutherglen’s iconic breadwinning grape varieties that is sought out by wine purveyors all over Australia for its generous flavour and ability to work wonderfully with food. Scion’s winemaking focus is on developing this dry table wine into one that offers elegance, balance, wonderful flavour and an ability to cellar well.
